Yours, Now Mine celebrates 20 years of service

Twenty years ago three dedicated women wanting to make a difference to their community started the Yours, Now Mine Op Shop at Greythorn.

1999 was the International Year of the Senior Citizen. Betty Pase, Elvira D’Adam and Anna Fratta proposed the idea to set up an Opportunity Shop to raise money for elderly Italians residing at two Aged Care facilities, San Carlo’s Aged Care, South Morang and St Francis of Assisi at Rosanna.

The idea of an op shop was readily accepted by The Scalabrini Fathers who at that time were charged with the management of both facilities.  The pastoral carer at that time was Padre Emilio Vaccaro.  The op shop is now managed by the  Board of San Carlo homes for the Aged in South Morang.

The journey to set up the op shop was handsomely supported with a generous donation from Mr Carlo Travaglini, of Alepat Taylor of Preston. The funds allowed for a lease to be taken out on the premises at 321 Doncaster Road, North Balwyn on 20 May 1999.

Twenty years on the op shop has grown to serve the local area with numerous well-loved goods and supports aged Italians in care at San Carlo Homes for the Aged, South Morang.

The shop is run by a very dedicated group of up to 40 volunteers working different rosters. All money raised is channelled directly into providing services and new facilities for the San Carlo homes residents. Of the 40 volunteers, 19 are the original volunteers who started at the shop 20 years ago.
